The India Power Grids Operations Center (INOPC) is a competence center with around 900 skilled engineers who focus on tendering, engineering, planning, procurement, functional system testing, installation supervision and commissioning. However, over the last decade, it has evolved to become the largest engineering hub within PG Business and HVDC and FACTS engineering center outside ABB Sweden. The India Operations Centre is a key aspect of the Power Grids business Power Up transformation program. The INOPC team at Chennai supports ABB units in more than 25 countries across a wide portfolio of all the four business units in Power Grid business. To date, the team has executed engineering and commissioning for projects in more than 60 countries.
Your responsibilities
- Preparation of all Primary Engineering deliverables.
- Substation layouts and section drawings preparation for budgetary offers / tenders / projects based on customer specification.
- Excellent understanding of HV substation single line diagrams, configurations and layouts, to include design safety and electrical clearances, earthing, cable routing, maintenance access etc.
- Knowledge of primary equipment, such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches, instrument transformers, power transformers, etc.
- Prepare, review and validate bill of material for tenders or projects based on requirement.
- Responsible for all design calculations related to Primary Engineering.
- Grounding system design, drawings and Bill of Materials.
- Lightning system design, drawings and BoM.
- Lighting system design and BoM.
- Technical data sheets verification of primary equipment. Knowledge of primary equipment, such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches, instrument transformers, power transformers, etc.
- Providing Optimized and Customized solutions for various substation tenders (AIS, GIS, Hybrid, MoSS).
- Use creativity wherever appropriate to provide best solutions for the given situation within the framework of tender Continuously develop standard templates and databases for tender engineering.
- Planning of review meetings with OU, workload for team and RelEx initiatives.
- Vendor Offer Evaluations. FAT / SAT of Primary Equipment, System as and when needed.
- Responsible for obtaining customer approvals for the designs and drawings.
- Technical risk and opportunity assessment and validation.
- Take part in customer meetings / site visits for tender/project clarifications.
- Estimation of engineering effort for each project for costing at tender stage.
- Innovative ideas to reduce engineering effort.
- Plan, Implement, Review and Continuously improvise quality system.

Your background
- A Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
- 7-10 years experience in Substation design & Engineering.
- Knowledge of HV grid power systems.
- Understanding of interfaces to HV and MV overhead line and cable systems.
- MV substation engineering understanding and experience preferred.
- Basic understanding of secondary design aspects of substations, such as CT VT Sizing, Cable sizing, Protection & Control schemes, LVAC / LVDC supplies, Interlocking, Telecommunication, etc is an added advantage.
- Basic understanding of civil and structural design elements of substations, such transformer bunds, cable troughs, ducts, support structures, substation access roads, etc.
- Proficiency in required CAD design tools (Autodesk Revit, 3D competence preferred).
- Knowledge of relevant International standards ex. IEEE, IEC etc.
- Knowledge in substation tendering and project engineering activities (technical & commercial).
