About the Team: AI, Systems, and Technology (AIST)

The AIST team at Atlassian focuses on driving transformative changes through Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions, particularly within our Customer Support Services (CSS) organization. Our goal is to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of CSS through cutting-edge AI/ML innovations while emphasizing AI responsibility and Human-in-the-Loop methodologies.

The team is a mix of Machine Learning Engineers, Data Scientists, Systems Engineers, and Software Engineers, offering a collaborative environment for knowledge sharing and professional growth. We work closely with various teams across the company, providing ample opportunities to contribute to high-impact projects.

About the Role: Machine Learning Data Scientist

As a Machine Learning Data Scientist at Atlassian, you will be responsible for developing and implementing machine learning algorithms, training sophisticated models, and collaborating with both technical and non-technical partners. Your work will directly contribute to expanding our AI/ML functionality in partnership with the CSS and Sales organizations. We are looking for a talented individual who is both data-driven and capable of aligning machine learning solutions with business objectives.

What You ll Do:

• Develop and implement machine learning models, especially focusing on NLP (Natural Language Processing) and LLMs (Large Language Models) to solve business challenges.
• Lead end-to-end delivery of ML projects: from design and development to deployment and monitoring.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (including engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders) to ensure the successful implementation of AI/ML solutions.
• Communicate complex data science concepts to a broad audience, creating a compelling narrative around the impact of ML on business goals.
• Guide and mentor peers, contributing to knowledge sharing and best practices within the team.

What We Expect on Your First Day:

• 5+ years of experience in Data Science or related fields, with a solid background in Machine Learning.
• Expertise in applying a broad variety of ML methods, including NLP and LLMs, to solve complex business problems with large datasets.
• Proven experience in delivering ML projects end-to-end, from design and development to deployment and monitoring.
• Strong programming skills in Python or Java, with the ability to write efficient, scalable code. Familiarity with SQL, Spark, and cloud data environments like AWS or Databricks.
• Agile development mindset with an appreciation for continuous iteration and improvement.
• Exceptional communication skills, capable of explaining complex ML concepts to a diverse audience, including non-technical stakeholders.

Nice to Have (Not Required):

• A post-graduate degree in a quantitative discipline, with at least 5+ years of relevant experience.
• Experience working in the consumer or B2C space, or domain knowledge in customer support and/or sales, including an understanding of the challenges and dynamics in these areas.
• Comfort in solving complex problems in ambiguous spaces where the solutions may not be clear from the start.
