JOB PURPOSE:

To provide managerial and technical direction to a staff of engineers and support personnel engaged in product or product/process design, development or research activities, which accomplish product maintenance and new product introduction objectives. This is specific to the Engineering for Engines Business Units

Reporting to this position are various levels of engineers and support personnel.

Primary accountabilities of this position may include product design, product and process design, development or research of Engines, related components or systems.In addition, the incumbent may be accountable for other significant activities such as Product Reliability or Product Support.This position is a key participant in determining product strategy, plays an active part in planning the workforce, and works with customers to determine needs, resolve problems, etc.

This position transcends from the role of supervisor to that of manager.The incumbent needs to be an excellent communicator and begin developing as a strategic thinker; needs to be technically credible, keeping abreast of technology changes while depending on staff for the technical depth and breadth.Incumbent needs a breadth of knowledge and experience including products, processes, design and evaluation, and organization vision, procedures and policies.This role requires a long range focus on business strategy.Key responsibilities include planning for future resources and developing capabilities in terms of people and technology; consciously establishing a culture that encourages innovation, partnering and collaborative relationships and a customer focus; developing partnerships within Caterpillar and with suppliers and customers; and integrating products and services to meet customers needs.

This position will work with different internal customers, depending on the specific assignment; some of those are manufacturing managers, product managers and NPI managers.The products and services provided vary from product concepts to products and processes, intellectual property, plans and resources.Decisions made by incumbent will affect not only own unit, but an entire division or business unit and, potentially, all of Caterpillar, the market and suppliers.Those decisions will shape complex systems, multiple products within a product line, processes or factories and customers perception of the company; and could have significant impact on sales and warranty and future product direction and cause evolutionary affect on technology.

While the culture of specific business units and service units vary, this position faces ongoing change increased competitive pressures, increasing product complexity and ever increasing customer demands.Significant challenges from managing new technology, managing the leadership in the organization, sourcing technical people, replacing expertise and growing technical experts can be expected.Position requires ever increasing skills in visioning, strategic planning and coaching and leading people.This role requires that the incumbent increases understanding of the business, the business aspects of technology and the customers business and needs.

Qualifications

BACKGROUND/EXPERIENCE:

Typically this position will require an accredited Engineering degree with at least 15 years of experience with Engines and related core and application components for Engines.An advanced degree is desired. Previous team leadership experience is necessary and advanced program management skills are critical.Must have excellent communication and organization skills and be able to deal with sensitive issues, mentor and coach and/or persuade others on new technologies, new applications or potential solutions.
