Job Summary

Working on a 24 7 shift pattern, within the Global Network Operations Centre. Managing the Global Tx (SDH, DWDM, Sub-sea) Network and DCN using Network Management Systems and Operational Support Systems, the Shift Engineer will ensure that all Faults, Planned Work and Activation requests are carried out to comply with Service Level Agreements, and that all processes and procedures are being correctly followed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Act as Second Level escalation point and handle faults related to Subsea, DWDM and SDH network
  • Support, proactively manage and monitor services such as IPLC, Wholesale capacity for carriers etc from Global Network Operational Centre
  • Liaise and task Field Engineers to manage and clear both network and customer faults
  • Liaise with off-net Service providers, vendors and other agencies to ensure efficient operation of IP network
  • Communicate with other Network Operation Centre s and escalate where necessary both internally and externally in order to meet SLAs
  • Maintain MTTR, RFO and Service reports to the customers as per the KPI
  • Follow Global work instructions to all laid down procedures and ensure service quality to customers
  • Handle escalations and be a focal point to all Tx service related queries
  • Participate in Planned works as per schedule
  • Maintain proper documentation, Case history in service tickets
  • Initiate and own Pre-planned restoration and normalization within OLA
  • Reduce downtime on customer services by providing workarounds and alternatives

Key Performance Indicators

  • SLA Target Time to Repair < 4 Hrs (category service cases)
  • All Planned Work cases are to be closed in < 24 Hrs
  • Activation of Pre-Planned restoration and ad-hoc restoration within 4 Hours of go ahead
  • Alarm Management as per set targets

Qualification & Experience (E = Essential; D = Desirable)

Educational / Academic Qualification

  • E = Bachelor s Degree in engineering
  • D = Master of Engineering

Professional Certifications / Additional Qualification

  • E = Sub-sea operations qualified
  • D = Working experience in Global operations

Experience (Min. years)

  • 8-12 years experience in operation/ installation of Telecom transmission and SUBSEA equipment
    • Minimum of 5 years directly related Tx engineering experience and 2 years NOC related experience
    • Minimum 3 year international telecom experience
    • Technical competence in SDH, DWDM
    • Knowledge of Network Management Systems and local CRAFT terminals

      Technical / Functional Skills (E = Essential; D = Desirable)

      Technical competence in the following areas: SDH, DWDM, Sub-sea and in particular

  • ASN, Ciena, Fujitsu, Infinera, NEC Network elements
  • Principles of Submarine System Design, Power Feeding, EDFA, Fibre Types, CD, Laser Safety
  • Advanced knowledge of Sub Sea Systems, including SLTE s, PFE, Repeaters, Equalisers, CODTR and cable
  • Use of NMS for alarm, PM and fault analysis
  • Knowledge of SDH, DWDM, OTN, NMS, Basic TX, PCM, PDH, Synchronization, Alarms, Performance Monitoring
  • Expertise on OTDR, COTDR, DTAs and optical measurements

OSS/OFFICE

  • Use of a trouble ticketing system and OSS systems
