OVERVIEW:

The Data Scientist will support the needs of the data management and analytics tools, as we install base grows and the demands for on-going data services expands. The position will primarily be responsible for providing and performing data analytical tools and methods, as well as playing a key role in the development and management of data monitoring and analytics tools and services. The Data Architect will also contribute in the use of field and operational data for the continuous improvement of our products.

ACCOUNTABLE FOR:

Developing and enhancing data monitoring methods for reliably retrieving data from field sites, working cross-functionally to navigate customer security and cost requirements, practical issues from field comms access challenges. Once data is gathered, designing and maintaining tools for deriving maximal value from the data, including operational and performance analytics, as well as failure analysis, root cause investigation and opportunities for improvement. In addition, developing internal or managing external data repositories, analysis tools and methods to build a robust data management and process system that provide ease of use and access to the data.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSBILITIES:

  • Performing data analytics of large telemetry sets
  • Develop automated analytical tools for streamline data analysis
  • Develop helpful, interactive visualizations for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Support design of data flow architecture for the reliable, cost-sensitive, and secure transport of data from remote sites
  • Manage relationships with internal or third-party data service providers, including developing specifications and verifying deliverables against them
  • Provide analysis on demand for field support or management requests
  • Strong background with data science, including statistics, physical modeling, and correlation
  • Develop models based on empirical data for the design of controls algorithms
  • Create controls algorithm designs suitable for embedded firmware, as well as maintaining and improving existing designs
  • Design, debug, and test battery system simulation models
  • Develop and maintain technical project documentation and write scientific and engineering papers
  • Develop written test procedures and full product verification planning
  • Develop software design proposals and specifications
  • Actively support microprocessor embedded software design, programming, and testing
  • Offer active involvement in scheduling and planning team meetings to deliver on time
  • Provide technical guidance to other engineering personnel and field operations
  • Support Sales and Business Development with product simulation and modelling for existing and potential customers
  • Support the development, implementation and testing of data analytics platforms

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Experience in analysis and modeling of control algorithms
  • Experience in data science or computational science
  • Experience in data mining, big data analytics, data engineering, and/or image analysis
  • Experience with sensor data correlation and manipulation/correlation of large data sets
  • Experience with neural networks
  • Understanding of noise in data and methods to filter
  • Solid skills using Python (numpy, scipy, pandas, plotly), Jupyter Notebook, MATLAB and SQL
  • Ability to work independently or well within a team
  • Ability to quickly become proficient in new areas
  • Ability to understand the software architecture and algorithms required to support a battery management system
  • Understanding of how to model and attribute physical root causes to observations in data
  • Knowledge of embedded control systems and their applications
  • Competent skills with PCs, networking, device communications, integration, and architecture
  • A cooperative attitude and strong written/verbal communication skills are a must
  • A good understanding of hardware and physical system being controlled is required
  • Basic familiarity with Linux embedded systems and comfort in remote manual data retrieval

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum bachelors degree in computer engineering, or data science
  • Background in applied mathematics, algorithm optimization, control systems and data mining techniques with a minimum of 7 years experience.
  • Programming Languages: C/C++, Python (numpy, scipy, pandas, plotly), Jupyter Notebook
  • Embedded controls design: PID and State Vector control
  • Operating Systems: Linux and Windows

Experience with the following a plus:

  • Battery control, state of charge calculation and simulation experience
  • Data logging and monitoring systems
  • Deployment of large scale monitoring systems
