Job Summary

Employers usually require a bachelor's degree in engineering, and may require a master's degree. They may prefer degrees in specific engineering disciplines, depending on the industry and employer. Electrical engineering is one discipline commonly requested by employers. A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering may have courses on logic design, semiconductors, system design, physics, devices and circuits, circuit design, microcontrollers, electromagnetics, nanoelectronics, mathematics and microprocessor systems.

Other requirements by employers of instrumentation design engineers may include experience in the specific field or industry. Familiarity with design software, including AutoCAD, may be preferred. A few employers may prefer engineers with professional engineer licensure. This is granted by the state, and requirements generally include a degree from an engineering program that is accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, or ABET, four years of work experience and passing the state examination.
