Job Summary

We are looking for two bright and motivated Managing Editors to work on our prestigious Tetrahedron family of titles (Tetrahedron,Tetrahedron Letters,Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, andBioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, and a new, soon-to-be launched high quality journal, Tetrahedron Chem) within Elseviers Chemistry department, which is part of the STM journals (STMJ) Physical Sciences group.

We are looking for an individual with a solid scientific background, and excellent analytical and communication skills as well as a keen attention to detail and a strong sense for relationship management. This is a superb opportunity for an individual with an interest in scientific editing and / or publishing to play a critical role in supporting these journals while developing a career in scientific journals publishing.

As Managing Editor, you will report to the Executive Publisher and work within a wider internal team of Journal Managers, internal and external Editors and Publishers based in Chennai, Amsterdam, Beijing and Oxford. In addition, you will also collaborate with internal and external Editors to enable both the smooth day-to-day management of peer review and the timely acquisition and publication of special issues and related invited content. The role will be based in our Chennai office.

Job purpose:

To work with the Publishing team on acquisition, timely publication, and promotion via social media of high impact scientific content.

To work directly with authors, reviewers and editors to help manage an efficient, rigorous and author friendly peer review process, which maintains high professional and scientific standards at a high volume.

To act as the main point of contact between authors, reviewers, and editors during the peer review process.

What youll be doing:

  • Check all articles for completeness on submission
  • Monitor editor speed performance and address any issues that arise
  • Manage the article transfer service (ATS), including transferred acceptances
  • Manage the publication of invited content via tracking from invite to submission and then from submission to acceptance and promotion of accepted content
  • Manage social media promotion on the journal with input from Editors
  • Handle any ethical issues that arise on the journals with the assistance of the Editors

Requirements and core skills:

MSc in Chemistry (or related field) essential, PhD in Chemistry (or related field) desirable
Journal publishing experience desirable

Customer-focused and attentive with good written and verbal communication skills

Results-driven

Highly organised with strong prioritization skills

Excellent interactive, team working skills as well as the ability to work independently.

Flexible, analytical and proactive; ability to think critically about a wide range of scientific issues

Flexibility with working in a complex, matrix international environment

The ability to build, nurture and manage editorial teams

Continuous quality control and monitoring of all aspects of day-to-day publishing operations and actively address improvements where required

Full awareness of applications and up to date with Technology, Social Media and content enhancement in the academic arena

Measures of success:

Increased publications; Publish greater share of high-impact papers; Improved feedback from authors, editors and referees. Improved article visibility via social media promotion.

Decreased paper turnaround times. Strong working relationships with the internal and external teams.
