The Staff R&D Packaging Engineer will have responsibilities for development of packaging components and artwork design, design verification, shelf life testing and label design. This resource will also lead teams on special activities having business impact.

What you will do

  • Works with appreciable latitude for independent action to support development and sustainment of packaging and labeling components utilizing experience and knowledge of technology, products, materials, processes, equipment and industry standards (e.g. EN ISO 11607, ASTM and ISTA).
  • This individual will compile, analyze test data to write reports or establish technical specifications for designing or modifying packaging components processes and materials.
    May support business initiatives such as supplier initiated change requests (SICRs), kitting and procedure packs development projects. Experience in kitting and procedure pack processes desired.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Will build Quality into all aspects of their work by maintaining compliance to all quality requirements.
  • Strong quality systems background with ability to successfully navigate medical device design control process to convert marketing requirements for packaging and labeling into robust and creative designs. Will develop and verify design requirements/specifications.
  • Familiar with common packaging and labeling materials, processes, testing and design approaches for medical device packaging and be able to make sound design recommendations and provide input into the Failure Models and Effect Analysis (FMEA).
  • Capable of leading business critical initiatives and works cross functionally with implementation teams. May support business initiatives such as supplier initiated change requests (SICRs), kitting and procedure packs development projects.
  • Provides packaging/labeling information, represents R&D Packaging in preparing regulatory filings, submission of technical dossiers to regulatory bodies and assists in responding to follow up questions.
  • Will work independently, demonstrate a high level of project management and coordination skills and can manage a varied and heavy workload. May train and/or provide work direction to technicians and entry-level engineers.
  • Will be able to write protocols / reports that summarizes, analyzes, and draws conclusions from complex test results.
  • Develops technical solutions to complex technical problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Solutions require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity. Networks with key contacts outside own area of expertise. May be a technical leader on a project.
  • Self-manages time, project progress, and technical deliverables for project teams as R&D Packaging Core Team Member (CTM) on New Product Introduction (NPI) projects and other divisional business initiatives.
  • Identifies inconsistencies between product design and market needs and advocates for and recommends/leads changes in procedures and establishes best practices.
  • Demonstrates understanding of customer needs, knowledge of Stryker NV products and partners with key stakeholders to identify solutions to customer needs related to assigned area.
  • The successful candidate will be a self-starter, have a HIGH LEVEL of Responsibility and Commitment. Will be Execution and Results-Driven.

What you need

  • BS in Engineering/Technical Field (degree in Packaging or Industrial engineering or Food Science desired)
  • Advanced degree may be considered toward years of experience
  • 5+ years of relevant experience (Medical device packaging/labeling experience preferred).
  • Desired: Demonstrated experience in design, development and testing of packaging and labeling in a cGMP environment.
