Position Summary

The Vision for the Role

In 2009, we were one of the first Fellowships to be launched in India. Today, we not only continue to be one of the largest Fellowships, but we have the potential to be the largest pipeline of driven, skilled talent for the educational ecosystem in the coming years.

The Fellowship Recruitment Director (RD) will play an instrumental role in not only continuing to build operations to grow our talent pipeline over time, but to also strategically intervene and ensure that we are bringing in the most passionate and high-quality talent into Teach For India, into the sector post the Fellowship, and ultimately, into this larger nation-wide movement towards educational equity. In a nutshell, this is a team that not only brings in the didis and bhaiyas for TFI classrooms in the short-term, but it brings in our nations future heads of schools, CEOs, Education ministers and more.

The RD assembles and leads a team of individuals driven to unleash this passion, talent and leadership latent in many, many individuals across our country. The teams work is to identify, inspire and invest these promising future leaders of our country to embark on a highly challenging journey of teaching, leadership and lifelong global mission to end educational equity.

Team Overview

Reporting Manager: Chief Program Officer (CPO)
Team Size: 14-18 people

The Recruitment team is one of the most critical teams at Teach For India for 2 reasons:

  • Identifying and recruiting talent at scale - the team sees 40,000+ registrations, more than 10,000 applications and helps initiate 500-600 new Fellows into the Fellowship every year
  • Brand-building and advocacy not only for TFI, but for the sector at large - the team is a hugely external facing and interacts with 100,000+ individuals across colleges, graduate schools, corporates, nonprofits and various external partners every year, thereby, creating huge potential to impact TFIs overall brand and visibility, as well as giving voice to and advocating for important issues in our country including education equity, leadership, and more
  • To make all this come alive, the RD leads a team of about 14-18 members spread across regions in the country and frequent travel by the RD will be required. The Recruitment team also works closely with the Selection and Communications teams at Teach For India to deepen the efforts in bringing brand building, advocacy as well as ensuring the highest quality of Fellows. RD will also be a member of the Branding Team at Teach For India - a 5 member team comprising CPO, Selection Director, Communication Director, 1 member from our Strategy & Learning team as well as the Recruitment Director. They will also be a member of the Leadership Team composed of 20 Vertical Heads who lead various teams and city operations across our 7 sites at Teach For India.

    Responsibilities

  • Create a bold vision for the team and for this work
    • The RD must hold a clear vision for who we want to bring in as Fellows. A robust, compelling vision will be one that reflects thinking beyond just the recruitment vertical - it is a vision that is co-created keeping selection, branding, marketing and the larger alumni movement in mind
  • Leverage data to draw out powerful insights to inform strategic bets
    • Use data to assess key areas of leverage for the Recruitment team to focus on - for example, important recruitment pools, key messaging strategies, focussed elements for recruitment campaigns, how to better leverage partnerships, influencers etc.
    • RD will also manage the team budget, allocate resources aligned with the vision and goals, and define the annual team calendar based on the key priorities
  • Set clear, measurable goals to track both volume as well as quality
    • The RD must define a clear set of ambitious goals for the overall recruitment and matriculation cycle, as well as shared goals with Communication, Selection, City teams, and others
    • Monitor on-going progress via data dashboards to fine-tune interventions and strategic bets on an ongoing basis and ensure we are on track to meet our goals
  • Assemble a high-functioning team and build on-going capacity in the team
    • Lead a team of 14-18 individuals, spread across 7-8 cities
    • Build capacity in senior/ regional managers to enable them to further support regional recruitment teams and lead them to success
    • Ensure a collaborative team culture is sustained that values learning, growth, relationships while being focused on results
  • Build strong partnerships with internal teams as well as external partners
    • Lead and support efforts in building and maintaining relations with universities across the country and internationally, with corporate organizations, youth hubs, etc.
    • Co-lead efforts with the Communications vertical in leading regional branding strategies through channels such as print and social media, radio, television, and film
    • Work with the Selection Director to consistently thought-partner on insights about the quality of the Fellowship pipeline to further refine the recruitment strategy
    • Work with the Technology Director to build the necessary platforms and tools to support the application process as well as enable data-collection
    • Work closely with 7 City Directors, Fundraising team & Innovation Cell to understand their strategies & leverage partnerships for brand building, advocacy and recruitment efforts
  • Role model and build extremely strong communication and advocacy skills across our teams
    • Identify and leverage large high-visibility efforts such as seminars, webinars,TEDx talks, press releases, etc. to create advocates for the larger cause and for the Fellowship
    • As a member of the Branding Team, surface key insights about TFIs brand on an ongoing basis to the CPO as well as Communications, Selection and Strategy & Learning teams

    Minimum Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

    • A Bachelors or a Masters Degree in any field
    • 6+ years of relevant work experience
    • Previous experience managing large projects, setting up systems, processes and teams to successful outcomes
    • Agile, entrepreneurial and resourceful mindset in the face of uncertainty
    • Ability to maintain a demanding travel schedule and work long-hours (especially at key milestones in the Recruitment cycle like Recruitment deadlines)

    Preferred Qualifications, Skills and Competencies

    • Previous work experience in the education/ development sector with a deep understanding of inequity in India
