The IT organization enables VMware to function and continue to grow as the leader in the virtualization, cloud technology space. The IT Tools & Automation Teams charter includes evaluation, implementation, and support of IT tools as well as to provide automation solutions. The main objective is to enable various IT support teams with best in class solutions, this includes monitoring covering incident prevention, identification, isolation and performance assurance for a hyper-growth, highly profitable business. The team also has the charter to be a showcase for implementation of our VMware technology within VMware. Members of the team have a phenomenal opportunity to get a breadth of exposure to VMware products and technology through these VMware on VMware initiatives.

Job Summary:

This is an individual contributor position responsible for evaluation, design, implementation, configuration, management, and maintenance of tools used by VMware or its partners/ customers. The role would also involve ensuring scalability, high availability / fault tolerance and performance in the design and implementation of tools. In conjunction, this would also involve development of innovative automation solutions for monitoring, support, and reporting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Administrate and support IT tools and related infrastructure including:

(a) Configuration of Devices / Applications / Servers on Monitoring Tools such as Zenoss, Nagios, Solarwinds, Splunk, Dynatrace, Thousand Eyes, Runscope and Uptime.

(b) Level 2/3 troubleshooting of enterprise monitoring infrastructure for any issues related to monitoring including false positives, connectivity issues from monitoring server to device being monitored etc.

(c) Work directly with service providers pertaining to monitoring tools, technical support staff, tier II engineers and analysts, development team, delivery team, business analysts, business users, and management to resolve monitoring issues.

(d) Gather metrics and data points on operation performance to be shared with technical support staff, business analysts and leadership team; And recommend opportunities for improvement.

(e) Provide periodic and ad-hoc reports.

  • Evaluate and implement new tools and monitoring solutions including:

(a) Application/ Service/ API / Infrastructure / OS/ Network Availability monitoring

(b) Log Monitoring and aggregation

(c) Capacity/ Performance and End-user experience monitoring

(d) VMware on VMware solutions

  • Identify improvement opportunities and drive automation.
  • Identify opportunities to consolidate and to optimize tools.
  • Develop, customize, and manage dashboard.
  • Lead project discussionswith Technical Architects, Engineers and Vendors.
  • Work with Vendor/ VMware R&D teams for tool enhancement requests and bug fixes.

  • On-call support for tools, dashboard availability and for any critical issue troubleshooting.

Experience & Qualifications:

  • 5+ years overall work experience in IT/ Technical Operations organizationsin supporting worldwide enterprise infrastructure, systems, and applications.
  • 4+years of experiencein Tools or Automation domain.
  • Experience in virtualization technology including knowledge on VMware datacenter and network solutions.
  • Experience of monitoring servers, application, and components from different cloud providers like AWS, Azure etc.
  • Experience in building reports, for example: Availability, performance, and capacity reports.
  • Experience and understanding of Project Management Methodologies.
  • Experience in troubleshooting enterprise incidents/outages using monitoring tools to provide feedback to service owners regarding abnormal trends in monitoring like high response time, latency in DB query time etc.
  • Working experience in a global environment with teamslocated in multiple regions.
  • Degree in the field of computer science, engineering, informationsystems or equivalent.
  • IT certification (ITIL) or equivalent is preferable.

Required/Desired Skills

  • Technical Support experience of 2+ years preferably in Enterprise Monitoring Environment.
  • Administrative knowledge of at least two out of below list monitoring tools: ThousandEyes, Runscope, Uptime, Nagios, vROps, LogInsight and Dynatrace.
  • Unix/Linux working environment and shell scripting for troubleshooting purpose.
  • Strong background in scripting and automation.
  • Knowledge of at least one scripting language (Ex: Perl, PHP, Python and JavaScript).
  • Knowledge of database design and PL/SQL scripting.
  • Adaptability of new monitoring tools and platform.
  • Adaptability to support and work in 24x7 environment.
  • Knowledge of VMware solutions (Ex: vSphere, vROps, LogInsight, Wavefront and vRNI).
  • Good experience on MS Excel, formula, pivot tables and chart creation.
  • Good presentation and communicationskills (both verbal and written).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with cross functional teams.
  • Strong organizational, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Experience in mobile app development is preferable.
  • Knowledge on Dockers and Containers is preferable.
